Cleo E. Shumaker, 74, former Crawfordsville businessman and retired Indianapolis insurance executive, died Tuesday at Winona Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr. Shumaker had been suffering from a heart condition, and was admitted to the hospital only a few minutes before his death. He and his wife, who survives, made their home at 377 Westfield Blvd. Shumaker moved from here to the capital about 20 years ago. He was a partner in the Shumaker-McClure automobile dealership, and was associated with the Hartford Group Insurance Co. He retired from the latter firm in 1960 after 39 years of service. Mr. Shumaker was prominent in Indiana Masonic bodies including those of Crawfordsville. His work in behalf of the order led to his admission to the Indianapolis Shrine. In addition, he was affiliated with the Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite. At Crawfordsville, he held membership in Montgomery Lodge No. 50 F & AM, and the Knights Templar chapter. The deceased was a member of the Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, and at the time of his death, was serving on the official board. He also was a former treasurer for his church. An Army veteran of World War I, he was a member of Byron Cox American Legion Post 72. Born in Steuben County on Oct. 9, 1893, he was the son of John E. and Addaline Ringler Shumaker. He was married to Christine Pugh, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the winter of 1967. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Richard B. of Cleveland, and Donald E. of St. Louis; a daughter, Mrs. Marcia Weaver of Long Island, N.Y. and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Flanner & Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary. Graveside rites will be conducted at the Masonic Cemetery here.
